June Songwriting Challenges

  1. Use songwriting as a reflection tool. Recall the last time you were in a heated argument with someone and write a song taking their side.

  2. Animals have feelings too. Imagine that you are your favorite animal for a day. Write a song about what they see in the world - is it good? Is it bad? Is it something altogether miraculous?

  3. Listen through your favorite Broadway album. Try to write from the point of view of one of the musical’s main characters. Can you write the a better song than the musical’s composers?

  4. Sometimes restrictions can be creatively freeing. Write a song that uses no more than 20 different words.

  5. In Nashville there’s a saying - a song is just four chords and the truth. Well, some songs have even fewer chords. What happens if your entire melody only sits over 2 chords? Let’s find out!

  6. English is a language with tons of monosyllabic words. What if every word in your next song only has one syllable?

  7. Imagine the happiest moment in your life. Now write two different songs about it - one in a major key and on in a minor key.

  8. Comedy in music can go a long way. Write something that will make people laugh.

  9. Pick your favorite product at the supermarket. Write a jingle or theme song for that product.

  10. Write a sequel to your favorite pop song.
